I've notice something called DNS on my wap profile account. What's it for?

DNS stands for Domain Name Server, it's there to match ip numbers to names. If you didn't have access to a DNS and you do not have a host file (on UNIX) then you would be using ip numbers to access machines rather than their more friendly names.
