According to the tips, holding the back button is meant to make the phone go into standby (the dark screen with the digital clock). This doesnt work on my phone though; it will only go into standby if I leave it for a minute or so. I have tried turning it on and off, and have also tried a master reset, but neither worked.

I think you misunderstand standby as described here. standby just means the screen with the operator logo and date and time.
This has always worked this way on all
