Manchester United captain Roy Keane has left the club my mutual consent.

The shock development was revealed by the Old Trafford outfit on Friday, ahead of the weekend clash with Charlton Athletic in The Premiership.

The former Republic of Ireland international is hero-worshipped by the United supporters who will be surprised to see their idol depart so suddenly.

Keane's contract was due to expire in the summer and he has already hinted he felt the club would not renew the deal. After an outspoken attack on some of his colleagues for their heavy defeat at Middlesbrough was pulled from an MUTV programme, relations were said to be frosty between Sir Alex Ferguson and his skipper.

hes done quite well to last as long as he has given his outbursts and actions over the years ie admitting to trying to "do" a fellow professional, slagging the fans off etc.
while a lot of what he has said hasnt been wrong most players seem to say one thing and there out ie jaap stam.
no doubt celtic or someone like my club the boro will pick him up on his massive wage bill and he can sit in the treatment room of a new club.
a great great player in his hayday but sadly only a force 1 in ten game now

Mark my words he'll be a Celtic player by January...its amazing what a religious bigot can achieve. I am not a fan of Roy Keane.

@DJCreamz: So there was no-one motivating him? I'm not a fan of United but Keane was one of the grumpiest players in recent memory...his outburst a couple of weeks ago didn't suprise me at all.

i think this is quite a sad loss to the premiership as a whole. As love him or hate him you cant argue he made many games and the whole world of football more entertaining with his outspoken views and actions on the pitch - and this is coming from a NUFC fan!

be interesting to see what he does next!
