Believe it or not, it's exactly 20 years since Microsoft released Windows 1.0.And although the company is being fairly low key in its celebrations of the event (except in Japan),I think it's worth commemorating.

engadget

Microsoft has decided to release a special edition of Windows XP only in Japan to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first Windows. What’s most interesting about this edition is everything that’s not actually Windows XP: buyers will receive replica (e.g. not working) installation CDs of Windows 95, 98, Me, and 2000, Windows box origami, memorial stamps, memorial stickers, a memorial video from the man himself, and a special early “preview” version of Windows Vista, whatever that means. Only 9,999 packages will be available, so Microsoft is also handing out freebies to a few lucky individuals. Fifty people will be able to get in on the Windows Vista technical Beta, 20 will get their packages autographed by Bill Gates, 150 will be entered into a drawing for a frame for storing the discs, and 5 people get a free trip to tour Microsoft’s headquarters out in Redmond, Washington. This one will be released on December 9th for 28,140 yen ($235 USD).

i have heard vista is mainly only a cosmetic facelift and an expensive one at that. Plus to run it properly you are going to need the very top end graffics cards etc (for the transparency effects to work). Also they are meant to be building in ways of stoping people havine pirated material on their machines. So sounds more like it is being built for the film and music companies instead of us the end users. And they are going to sell it in a number of different versions - which put simply means you are going to have to pay one hell of a lot if you want a version with functionality!!!

only good thing about it is that it is supposedly going to be far far more secure.
