I'm looking for a decent freeware programme, other than iTunes as I have bought my girlfriend's dad a cheap MP3 player, and the software that comes with these players is at best basic and at worst terrible to use!
It has to be fairly easy to use, be able to convert songs from CD to MP3 format, perhaps let him rip his own CDs, and be able to convert in at least 128Kbps sound quality.
If all else fails I could introduce him to iTunes, but I don't like the way it security encodes every song.
So, any suggestions, and where to download them from? I know I could do a search on
www.download.com , but I don't know what programmes are good and which are cack, after some user experiences of what's hot and what's not

Well, there is always WMP10

, But seriously, iTunes is always the best, infact it got 'Cnet's best of the best 2005 award' for music player/library, if I remember correctly. If you want you could get Dbpower AMP, but i dont think any dad will be able to use it

. I'm out of suggestions here.

Thanks for the suggestion Debu!
I do rather like iTunes, apart from it encoding even songs ripped from CDs.

yeah dude, the DRM crap sucks!
That aside, It just occoured to me that Real player also has (DRM free) ripping and MP3 encoding, along with a library. you may have to shell out a couple of buck though.

I use CDex
http://www.download.com/CDex/3000-2140_4-10226370.html to rip my cds, its freeware, no DRM, very easy to use and if your hooked up to the net you can use it to fill in all the album details/song names for you.
Not sure how his MP3 player works for transferring files but the free realplayer allows me to manage my ipod, it might do the same for his.

iTunes doesn't security code music you've ripped yourself from CDs, or pre-existing MP3s, AACs from other sources. Only paid-for music downloaded from the iTunes Music Store has any identifying information in it for rights management.

Could try MediaMonkey. Pretty good all in program if you want to manage your music library.
Otherwise I agree with above; CDex is the one for ripping
