There's been a few threads on this lately, and the answer is 'not really'.
The reasons are:
1. It doesn't improve performance at all
2. It uses lots of read / write operations which wear your card out more quickly.
3. Some people have reported that their cards have been left unreadable by the device after defragging, requiring a format.

If you dont defragement it when you put like 480MB of mp3 in the memory stick you will notice a great delay when the list update!!!
It reduced after u defragement it!!
But one draw back is some program will crash because the files location changed.

I'm not denying that you noticed a speed improvement after defragging your card, I'm just saying that for most users it makes very little difference at all and is certainly not worth the risk or the wear and tear on your card

as for programs crashing because file location has changed??? that would suggest the program had taken the physical address of the file instead of the path and filename. can't say I have heard of that since the days of DOS! and even then it was very rare

I can only concur with cyco and masseur. If you format the card and copy everything back again it will perform the same effect as a defrag (ie: each file will be a saved as contiguous block of data) and will do it with far less disc activity than a defrag.

I have to agree with him here.
Personally I would actually format the memory stick via the phones options, I've tried both but find the phone option seems to agree better with my w800's current firmware
