Firmware is the software that makes your phone actually work. Just as a computer needs an operating system (Windows, OSX, Linuix etc.) to work, your phone needs a kind of operating system too. This is what we mean by firmware.

The firmware is stored on a memory chip inside your phone. Sony Ericsson regularly releases new versions of the firmware to make improvements to your phones' performance, fix bugs and sometimes (very rarely!) add new features.

The new firmware can be obtained by connecting your phone to a computer using a data cable or docking station and going to the Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) website. Usually, firmware updates complete with no problems at all, although there are some things that can go wrong:

1. Some phones that are 'branded' to a particular network (Orange, Vodafone etc.) cannot use the SEUS software to update the firmware. Orange and Vodafone were just given as examples, my Orange P910 can use SEUS but some other network branded phones cannot.

2. You must make sure that your phone is fully charged before starting the update. If the battery runs out during the upgrade, which can take up to an hour to complete in some cases, you might end up with a dead phone that needs to be taking back to the shop for repair!

3. Sometimes, Sony Ericsson release firmware that has bugs in it. Just recently, quite a few Esato members have upgraded their W800 phones only to find that after the upgrade, their memory sticks don't work properly!

There's a few other things to watch out for as well, I'm sure other members will post them for you here

I've replied to your PM

You don't need to upgrade your firmware as long as your phone is working ok and you are happy with the way it is working now
