Probably a naive repeat of something that the likes of Cycovision may laugh off
BUT I am in midst of a crisis of sorts with my main PC (disk with major data) under bad shape
with over 12000 files infected...
So I need to know if this months (December 2005) second Tuesday release of Microsoft does actually have the
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool update ?
Its not like am a complete noob (been with computers HALF my life) but some stroke of luck AND my comp. was without any Anti Virus for sometime
It was a failed HDD from orig'nal shipment & now I have an IDE 80GB Seagate as main disk. Other specs of my PC haven't changed much from
what it was except for the odd NIC (3Com PCI 3C905B- TX), LCD Monitor etc.
Some sentimental reasons (and the fact that it cost a bomb.. for my humble resources) , unavailibilty of such great suppliers here in India AND the fact that it was also brought to me as as a Millennium gift meant I can not bring myself to replace it !
Besides Symantec & these tidbits... any other advice, precautions you folks might have is HIGHLY thanked for in advance !
n sorry for the clumsy post

My issue is that now.. since I got back the replacement to my Original hard disk.. how do I transfer stuff from this transitionary disk with files (even zipped executables) compromised to God knows what extent !

the security bulletin is out. the malicious software removal tool can also be downloaded as a separate file
here
why can't norton get rid of the viruses?
suggest you also get a decent firewall (zonealarm) and antispyware removal tools (adaware, spybot, et. al.)

Thanx for the prompt reply :) Would have to see these Spybot Adaware if available locally here. > Norton 2005 IS doing some job. But if really bad it deletes the files. As for Quar'n'tine back up.. .. .. Well.. I might have pushed my luck- having stuffed my standby disks (70% of the actual disk data was on) I had only 10-15% free space. So some Quar'n'tined files are gone. Am still not sure whats the safe level to keep free off formated capacity :-? Wasn't expecting a case would come to back up SOO MANY !

Okay Great, so its possible to get it legally here. Pirated stuff no no.. Just wish they are not too resource hungry and have a small footprint ( Anti Virii Software usually hog quiet a few MB)

Thanks Blu.. Gelfen ! Now I do recollect 'Search & Destroy' also used the Symbian version.
.
. So basically Service Pack, Win Update PLUS all these ought to do?
It wont be risky to move files (exe, scr, Metafiles / Auto Cad files) from (with infection) HDD1 to HDD2 (fresh from factory) !?
