Hey

This was originally posted at What Mobile, but I may as well share with you!

I have since sold the neonode, I really didn't like it.

Right, this is quite long, so I am sorry, i probably will add things as i go, as i havent really had long to play with this!

ENJOY!

Well, where do I start?

How about the box!? Seeing as it was quite an experience! Reminded me of the original iPod days. Very exciting, and the box was impressive too.

Once I had opened the box, I was slightly worried by the instruction manual quoting N1. I hoped to God that i had been sent a N1m not the old N1.

On a slightly negative note, but one I will mention, the phone wasn't wrapped, or anything as you would expect with a new phone, no film on the screen, just placed in its secure fit portion of the polystyrene box. There seemed to be quite a bit of “dust” on the actual casing of the phone, which obviously brushed off without any trouble.

After being a RedNeo forum member, I had read the stories about batteries and the such, but I charged it for a good hour, and then got too tempted to play.

Inserting the SIM card proved a bit tricky. You will notice, that both the SD card, and SIM card, slide inside the phone, but both are still ever so slightly visible if you look from this angle.

The phone itself, was slightly bigger than I had imagined, but still small, it fits really well in your hand, and actually feels well built. Some of the regulars might know, I am not one to like squeaky phones, this **touch wood** has yet to show me any squeakiness!

However, the SIM card required being pushed inside the phone quite hardly, I was hoping I hadn’t broken anything, and went ahead and inserted the SD card (i went for 64mb), and powered the phone on.

The instructional manual, or “Getting Started Guide” as stated on the front cover, is very basic, and in black and white. Looks a bit rushed to be honest, but this is where Neonode’s new website comes in handy. They have updated it with a lot of useful getting started “guides”. These explain everything from making a phone call, to installing new firmware, or “Neno” as is it referred too.

There had been an update to the Neonode Neno yesterday so my first job was making sure I was up-to-date! These was an easy process, (with a Windows machine)... Macs are unfortunately not supported, yet I will go on to explain what can and can’t be done with Macs and the N1m later. The update took about 5 minutes to install itself, I was prompted to disconnect the phone, and switch it back on. Not knowing what to really expect, as I hadn’t played with the older version, I just got stuck in straight away.

Firstly, I wanted to test Internet Explorer, and a application called NeoMessenger, an MSN client for the phone.

I installed the NeoMessenger file, via USB, and opened it up on the phone. This was very very simple. The tricky bit, or so i imagined, would be getting the phone working with GPRS. But I was wrong, as one quick visit to Vodafone’s website, I sent the settings to the handset, by selecting a Nokia 7210, the settings came through perfectly, I connected to Internet Explorer, and was browsing Google in no time at all.

The browser was quick loading, and with the scrolling, and sweeping (moving your thumb from one side of the screen to the other), you can really move around the page fast.

I managed to check my Hotmail. Unfortunately the browser does NOT support WAP sites, so i could not access wap.phonefun4u.com to test it. It will support WAP in a future NENO i have been told.

The screen gets alot more easy to use after a while, and you get used to the sweeping etc. It really feels weird touching the screen with your fingers so much. I am usually so careful with my new phones, and going in straight away and getting the screen covered in finger prints was something that I am having to get used to! I have ordered a EXIM 02 X2 Phone Screen Protector, which according to another forum user, really work well, and fit the screen perfect. A recommendation, as the screen does get very fingerprinty, very quickly.

NeoMessenger worked very well, and can be run in the background.

Texting and MMS

I sent myself a text message, the T9 is really quite clever, for example, if I wrote Hi, How are you?, the next time I wrote “Hi”; How are you, would automatically appear, of course, by just continuing to write, it would override this. I do have quite big fingers, but didn’t have one problem with texting. You have to try it to believe it!

MMS is where I have encountered problems, i sent myself a message from my 902 to my Neonode, but the image would not display. I am yet to work out why this is.

This is what happened when i received a MMS:

Phone Calling

Making calls is simple, so is accessing the phone book, however the sound is VERY QUIET. I have upped the volume to the maximum, but I do have to say, the sound quality is poor. Playing Mp3s via the loudspeaker is a lot better. One area to improve is definitely the sound quality from the earpiece during a call.

The Screen

The screen is very clear and crisp, the colours are really sharp, and really show the phone off well.

The Camera

I will try and post some pictures here later, not got time atm,
Overall, I am really impressed. The phone has crashed on me, see below, but its so user friendly, and you can really customise it with new themes, etc.

Obviously its missing some important features like an ALARM clock, but these are prompts for developers out there, to design new applications which are already being made!

You will really get used to the sweeping and navigation after only 10 minutes max to be honest. I would really recommend this phone, if:

- you understand that it does have its problems
- that you will have faith in Neonode for bringing out new Nenos to iron out problems.

The Pros

+ A very unique, funky, and small handset
+ Navigation is really easy to use, very simple
+ Great room for new software

The Cons
- No bluetooth
- Poor sound quality during phone calls
- MMS seems a bit troublesome
