> Sony, BSkyB form HDTV pact

BSkyB and Sony Corp will jointly market high definition television (HDTV) with an advertising campaign and discounts when consumers buy a Sony TV set and a Sky settop box, the companies said on Wednesday.
BSkyB is counting on HDTV, which offers a sharper, more vivid picture than conventional TV, to help it reach its target of 10 million subscribers by 2010 -- up from about 8 million currently.
Electronics manufacturers such as Sony are hoping that HDTV will convince consumers to upgrade their TV sets.
"Until today we have laboured under a Catch 22. If the industry didn't produce and broadcast in HD, the consumer would be reluctant to purchase HD television sets or equipment," Sony Chairman and Chief Executive Howard Stringer said.
BSkyB plans to roll out several HDTV channels in the first half of next year.
