Hey there, i currently use a Dell dimension 2400 with 256mb ram, i design websites and use photoshop etc. and it tends to get slow.
ive been looking at the two new imacs (20 inch and 17 inch) and just have a few questions:
is it fast? will it run programs better than my crappy dell does now? is it worth the money? whats the main difference between the 20 and 17 inch, price or performance?
all in all are u happy with it
thanks guys

Ok I dont own a imac, but I have a old model g4 powerbook 1ghz, 512 and its nice awsome since getting it I never use my pc, the 1 ghz processor is so much faster then my 1.8 in my pc, and my pc hasmore ram. The main differences is the screen size and gerneral spec I believe the 20inch models is very nice (had a play on one) and the screen is massive, I think it has a slightly hdd 400gb or something lol.
the one thing is it doesnt use a windos os so you need to find any programs ur guna use on mac (isnt hard they even make microsfort office for it)
my advice is buy one macs rock buyit buyit buyit

I think part of your problem is having 256mb ram another 256mb will make a difference would it not?
But if your designing websites etc etc then a mac is definately they way to go, i have one and have never looked back.

mmmmm....
i do that same work mate and i have 1gb of ram on a P4... and thats fine...
if your doing DTP then apples the right way... but stick to a PC if you are only diong Website... the prob is that you cannot test properly what the client or the other users will see...
the PC just needs some decent ram....
Oh and no other %*^(& spyware and resource hungry applications pf course...

I do web design for a living and only ever use Macs. We test periodically on Windows PCs but Safari for Mac OS X Tiger is the most standards compliant browser available (its the only browser that passes the
Acid2 test).
After 10 years of web design you tend to get a feel for what works in the various browsers and we avoid browser specific functions - as should all web designers!
Also, if you really do need to test on Windows, you can always fire up Virtual PC. This also has the side effect of being slower than the Mac so its a good test of how the web-site runs on a lower-end PC.
There have been numerous studies that show that people who work on Macs are more productive (i.e. get more work done in less time) than people who use PCs.
Wait until after the announcemnets on Jan 11th before making any purchasing decisions however...

to pentium, i think it might be.
@icewind
most graphic design companies, including website companies design the best websites
i.e.
www.de-construct.com, they use macs so i dont think its a pc mac problem rather what i want to know is if they are reliable, fast. etc.

I've been using Macs for over 14 years, and owned nothing but Macs for the past 10 years (a Performa 6320, then PowerMac G3, then iBook, now eMac) and in all that time I've only had one reliability problem that required attention. That was a faulty CD-RW drive in the eMac (a part not made by Apple) - it was replaced in 2 hours by my local Apple Service Centre.
Also, none of the Mac I've ever used at work (10+ over the years) have ever had a hardware problems or needed to go back.
So I'd say Macs are very reliable in my experience.
The iMac you are looking at (G5) is much faster than our current Macs at work (all G4s) which we use daily for web design, DVD production, video editing etc. and they are plenty fast enough.
