I've always wonderd why the blind didnt just used raised letters rather than little dots.

same here... i never understood that what so ever. why these dots? and why in that pattern?!?

Because its a lot harder to read apostraphes, commas, full stops etc. Also, the fingertips aren't sensitive enough to distinguish between an "S" and a "5" for example - if it was simply raised writing it would be a lot harder to follow than a bespoke code.

true, but what if you started in the wrong place? like in between two lines, so you get the top of 2nd line and bottom of first...
