I was looking to the EXIF information of pictures taken by K750. "Software" field should be empty but instead, we see phone's firmware information. There is "firmware" space for this information, why SE is using "software" field?

I guess it depends on how you'd describe the firmware and the software.

The firmware on a PC is the BIOS. The software is the OS, Windows, Linux, whatever.

When flashing SE phones, there are two areas that are updated. You could consider one area, which most loggers call "main", to be the firmware. The other area, called "FS" (filesystem) could be considered the software.

exactly. In the case of phones, the firmware is more complex than what is usually thought of as firmware. It qualifies more as an OS than the simple firmware on a digital camera (although even those are getting more complex)

Guys, your explanation makes sense. Thanks.

But this isn't true for every phone, that is to say, software information is missing ("doesn't exist" is better I think) on Nokia phones for example.

All I want to say, there is some EXIF implementation difference between manufacturers (or their firmware/camera handling system is different).

On the other hand, we should see camera software version in this place, which is 4.5 on my phone. Phone's main firmware isn't still related with the software field of picture's EXIF information IMHO.

hmmm good point. I agree implementation is different from one manufacturer to another. As longs as they keep the iso/exposure/date type info standard I guess I can live with it

Well, we agree then. I guess I can survive with current EXIF setup too. I also think it is curious...
