Well the fact is ipods really are not that good, just that they were introduced into the market at the right time by apple when MP3 players at the time were really just gimmicky and everyone was still useing CD/Tape or MD walkmans...Since it was Apple the brand just took off,..ipods are have now become more of a fashion statement rather than being good at what they do..and the rest is history as they say...lets face it without the ipod i don't think we would even have walkman branded

today.

very well said @axxxr
also, now if "MP3 player" is mentioned, most people automatically think IPOD. and alot of times people think they need an ipod if they want to listen to music on the go.
Its more of a stylish thing IMO now.
its another FAD... just like guys wearing pink, people wearing their belts sideways, dying your hair funky colors etc. (in america atleast)

LOL@EastCoastStar...The iPod is popular IMO because Apple have made it quite simple for people to copy their music onto their player with iTunes...what they've also done is market this simplicity so no even though their are other superior players on the market the iPod comes out on top with the added factor of it being a fashion accessory.
At my local gym it seems everyone has an iPod but I fear it's days of dominance might come to end quite soon.
I never got why people had to walk around with their whole music collection...unless I'm stranded in Outer Mongolia for nine months I can leave all my MF Doom albums at home.

I'd say simplicity and design, that's about it, and the iTunes interface is near flawless and very technophobe people could easily use it, I think thats about it really, and it does have good sound reproduction....!
(I use a 3rd gen, not that fond of the newer ones with click wheel...)

Style over substance, i suppose. I like my Shuffle, when i'm cycling to work the last thing i want to do is grapple with loads of buttons and options while negotiating a busy road in the dark, with cars and lorries whizzing by.

what substance is it lacking exactly though? It plays mp3s just like every other mp3 player! Is UI is easy to navigate and the sound quality is good but thats objective of course. Itunes works perfectly as is far better than other software ive seen for other mp3 players.
My gf bought a sony mp3 player (or should I say atrac3 player as it didnt actually play mp3s!) and it was broken when we got it home, the replacement for that broke within a week, the replacement for that one broke as did the following two replacements! Neither she nor I will ever touch a sony mp3 player again!

Personally I dont think its any thing to do with the way they look. I love my ipod for the fact that it holds ALL the music I own and I can carry it anywhere. the other killer feature is its simplicity and UI.

Don't you think carrying two devices is a bit off.
I think walkman phone are going to out do this IPOD.
But the only problem with fones is that they keep bringing new ones. Maybe they should stivk to one they've made a market them as much as they can.
