For the election in autumn 2006 a newfounded party named "Piratpartiet" (Swedish for "the Pirate Party") is looking for voters and members. Their target is to repeal the Copyright Act and strengthen the personal integrety. Which would result in that file sharing would become totally legal.

And if u think this is a joke you are wrong. They are very serious. In Sweden they think there are about 1,000,000 file sharers (1/9 of the total population). To take a place in the parliament in Sweden they need to get atleast 4% of the votes. That is 250,000 votes, 1/4 of the file sharers and they think it could be possible. Altough a disadvantage is that many file shares are under age and cant vote. But there will be a election in 2010 also

They dont want to take any political position (left or right, red or blue etc.) as they only focus on the 2 things they have, nothing else. Their goal is to clear the 4 % barrier and take a place as a decesive party in the middle that can settle which of the 2 sides that will win.

And it seems possible. In an internet examination at Sweden's largest newspaper's homepage the question "Would you vote for the Pirate Party?" has got 57.1 % yes of 97,691 voters.

(footnote: In Sweden its illegal to share copyrighted music and film since June, 2005. There has been 2 cases which have led to court. In both cases it was about sharing a film and resulted in a fine of around 1,250£)

Hasnt film sharing always been illegal though as its copyright infringement?

Nice to see them standing up for something they believe in though.

these musicians and film-makers are just trying to earn a living and sell their product to the world....and these piraters are stealing from them wich is against the law..
im sorry but im on the side of sanity....if i was in sweden i would vote against this party and keep the copywrite laws in place...
the reason i feel strongly about this is because thats the career path im looking to go down and i certainly dont want anybody stealing from me

its also a bit of a myth that file sharers dont buy films and cds etc.
in fact according to recent surveys conducted by pc pro (i think it was them or pcw) they found that file sharers tended to buy 30% more than a non file sharer. perhaps these people just want to test the quality before they buy, and i agree with the comment earlier hollywood and the music industry deliberately put unfinished crap out just to make key deadline to make money. would a car maker be allow to release a car without safety tests just so they could hit the most profitable selling time?
