I have a K750 with a good remote for my earphones, a 2GB pro duo and Opera Mini to browse the full internet (as well as a few other goodie applications).

I’ve seen the info on the new W810 and the rumours of the K version, and quite frankly I’m very disappointed. They seem to offer hardly anything more than we can currently get on the W800/K750.

Rather than knocking out all these new phones quickly, Nokia style, I think SE should focus on releasing the most cutting-edge of products. Hence, I thought I’d air my wishlist about what I believe the next wave of candybar phones should be able to achieve:

- About W810 size (maybe even smaller!)
- Bigger screen
- Much higher resolution screen (look at the new ipod!)
- At least 4MP camera
- Better photos in dark conditions
- Better video capture (resolution)
- Support for more media file types (wma, the itunes one, mov, mpeg, wmv)
- A decent remote control bundled (features of the old sony minidisk ones but smaller size)
- Wireless connectivity (so we can use all these hotspots cropping up)
- 3G (with miniscule front camera that can hardly be seen)
- More pda functions (eg ability to read excel, pdf files - even if this is only developed through java apps), without being a typical bulky smartphone
- Properly tested firmware (for a change).

Not so important wishes:
- Firewire & USB 2 support (although apple seem to have compromised on the firewire future for their new buddies Intel who own USB2)
- Optical zoom (only reason that is in the ‘not so important’ is coz I can appreciate it’s a toughie for a small phone!)
- Touch sensitive screen with tiny pen (smartphone style) – but on a phone no bigger than the W810 - dependent on bigger screen.

So, these are the types of things that I really would consider to be development in the mobile phone (candybar anyway) world. I hope we start to see some of them.

If anyone has any of their own ideas (realistic), then chuck ‘em down!

More Smartphones ala Nokia S60. UIQ is great but why restrict us to touch screen input, why not have both?

Eeeh... not possible...

- 3G (with miniscule front camera that can hardly be seen)
lol If there is a camera @ the front, belive me you will see it.

- Properly tested firmware (for a change).
All firmwares are properly tested. If you have programmed anything your self you would know there is not possible to make such a program with no bugs.

- Better photos in dark conditions
You need a real flash for that.

Do you have any idea how a phone looks inside?
All chips take space. Is there even 4mp cameras out for mobile devices?

-ability to read excel,pdf files
This I want to.

Also do you know what this dream mobile of yours would cost?
2000$?
3000$?
lol

"I’ve seen the info on the new W810 and the rumours of the K version, and quite frankly I’m very disappointed. They seem to offer hardly anything more than we can currently get on the W800/K750."

I think you are very disappointed but you will still upgrade to a new because no other manufacturer can offer better specs on a candybar.

"Rather than knocking out all these new phones quickly, Nokia style"

Are you kidding me? How long time didn't it take for Nokia and all the other manufacturers to match k750/w800?

"I think SE should focus on releasing the most cutting-edge of products."

Isn't this what do?

Go read my post in this thread and see what I think.

Oh look at this post nr 500 lol

How do you expect them to give you a phone smaller than a W810 but with a larger screen?

Its not possible, unless you dont want a keypad?

PDF viewer/reader better nighttime photos and a great stand-by time. O and I wish they wouldn't copy Nokia in the UI (from what I hear UIQ3 is going to be very similar with S40 interface). That's bad !

S4k1s:
I read your points with interest, you clearly have a good appreciation of the current mobile phone market (you are also clearly a bit more defensive than you need to be).

Rather than go through every one of your points, I would like to paraphrase something you wrote on the link provided: "Don't be so narrow minded".

Some of things you have slated as being 'not possible', quite simply are possible. It just needs some effort to make it happen (eg 4MP camera - also there is space to make the screen bigger - pull out your phone and open your eyes!).

Quite simply, I would rather see Sony Ericsson focus their efforts on making such things happen rather than bring out phones that do not add much to what is already available.

Yes there are marketing and revenue reasons, but I am only talking in context of mobile phone development, and being at the foreront of technological capabilities.

Oh, one more thing to add... I am a programmer and I have nearly always released bug-free work which has stood the test of time. The way I did it: used my brain and had absolute pride in building it, and conducted thorough testing considering every possible user action. The phones aren't so complex that this can't be done cost and time effectively.

Your input and passion really is fantastic to read and appreciate - you come across like you could even work for SE. As such, I'd really be interested in hearing your opinion on something:
Think 5 years from now... what would you ideally like to see on your candybar phone?

I don't know if you have made som low level-real time programming or core programming. I am a programmer my self. Except the win/*nix/network programming I have also done chip and robot programming. I work with real-time engineering/programming. And there is allways bugs. Some bugs you see directly and you fix them, other occur 1/100 or 1/1000 times a program or a function/thread is runned. Todays phones are complex. Really complex. You dont only have to deal with hw issues but also with user input. You have to think like a stupid user some times :] and all that u have to think of.
This is why some bugs take time to find and/or gets noticed after a phone is out, when lots of people have used it. This is also why firmwares are tested for months.
Having said that...
There is also the fact that todays companys have to rush products out in the market. The internet have made it easier for companys to release bugfixes and new firmware versions. So companys often discard bugs that occur say 1/10000 times and hope people won't notice or care about it. And then they release fw updates after some time.
Even games and programs never stay on the X.0v.
Bugfree HW related software is so much harder do make.

About your last question now Baz.
There isn't much new things I would like to see.
Anyway...
Screens capable of 640x480
5-7MP camera, optical zoom
Touchscreen/D-Pad
8/10GB int memory (chip)
Ext memory
Real multitasking
USB2, Wi-Fi, 3G+, HSDPA/HSUPA,etc...
Software compatibility with common file types.
True media player
TV/Video playback 25fps
Video in PAL/NTSC 640x480/800x600 recording
Good sound recording
sound/video chips (probably inegrated onboard by then)
A good remote control
Gaming is not an issue for me in a phone, 32/64bit games is ok

Strong battery
(I feel biggets problem today with mobile devices is the batteries)

This specs in w900/p900 size phone
Depth: 22mm +-2mm
Weight: 145g +-5g

Sorry for my long post =P

Good call on some of those wishes chaps!

I just had a great thought (as I'm sure millions of others already have):
Maybe 15 years away we could get hologram and 2d projection from our mobile phones.

Rather than flick on an episode of Lost on my phone on the train home from work, I could conjure up a 'special friend' hologram who will laugh at all my jokes, tell me I'm underpaid and worth more than the company I work for, that I'm looking fantastic and five years younger than my age, convince me that my chick is the hottest thing in the whole world and filthy in bed... and maybe even replicate the image of Carmen Electra at 23... naked. Lost will never cut it anymore. Oh damn.
