Hi all

Like many I feel disapionted by what SE is offering us next after a many years of loyal service to them Im really considering the Mitac Mio A701 as my next phone. I know its runs windows mobile 5.0 but thats ok. No WIFI but BT and it is based on a mobile rather than a PDA. What wins it for me is GPS and its sexy design.

Just thought I'd see what you guys reckon?

A wee review:Chalking up the second communicator with embedded GPS functionality, Mio Technology has unveiled its Windows Mobile based Mio A701, merging phone and handheld functionality with positioning services. Powered by Windows Mobile 5.0, the Mio A701 is second only to the HP iPAQ hw6500 series, introduced this summer, in its level of integration.

Based on an Intel PXA270 processor running at 520 MHz, the device will feature a 2.7-inch touch screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. A total of 192 MB of memory is available, of which 128 MB is in the shape of non-volatile Flash ROM, whereas the remaining 64 MB is of the RAM variety in which applications will run.

The main draw of the GSM-based communicator is however its integrated GPS functionality, powered by a latest-generation SirfStar III chipset, with Mio Technology having managed to avoid flip-out antennas as seen in previous products from the company. Other highlights of the Mio A701 include a 1.3 Megapixel camera, as well as Bluetooth 1.2 and an SDIO capable SD/MMC Card expansion slot.

For some reaseon I cant post pics so check it here.

Only if you're interested in GPS (and can't live with a separate bluetooth module). In every other way the P990 is streets ahead, IMHO.

See this is the piont! Im from the UK and love GPS. Yes its no real hassel to have a seperate BT reciever but why bother when you dont have too. I've waited years for the P900/910 successor and what there offering is a let down. It'l be so behind the times when they release it (if and when that is)! Im not saying im turning my back on SE, I'll b back one day but when the do somethng amazing again like when we all dreamt about owning the P800. Back then it was really different and won me over.

So yeh I aint done with SE yet but as they say, "A change can do you good".

p910 was out late 2004...
so you can not have been waiting that long...

As for the Mitac Mio A701, p990 is waaay better in everything but it seems to lack that one thing that you need, GPS. I think the Mio A701 have good looks and since it does what you want it to do, you go for it lucky777.

Having said that...
I think you should try out WM5 first for your self before buying a phone with it. masseur praises it, I personaly don't like it, but I have friends that can't live without it =P
So try it out first and if it fits your needs then buy it.
There is no reason for you to buy a phone that don't fit your needs.

I wonder why some P990 fanatics keep saying that the phone is "way better" than others?! I turned my back on SE with my new Windows Mobile 5.0 PDA (been using P910 and other SE phones for a few years) and I yet to find out what aspect P990 is better than my Dopod 818 Pro?! So far I’m 100% satisfied with my new phone.
And it's very popular here to blame Windows Mob. OS, but I hope you realizing that new Symbian OS is going to be buggy too. One of the reasons for P990 is the OS problems..

So the point is that I agree with those saying that specification wise P990 is nothing special.

Well I upgraded from my P910 to an XDA Mini S (Although I still have my P910), I cant really say one is better than the other in terms of OS, I feel that Symbian is quicker and easier to use for phone functions, but Windows is better fro PDA functions.

More to the topic though, Buit in GPS looks cool, if your a hiker or lost in a city while shopping or something, but at the end of the day for in car, it wouldn't make any difference to have a receiver in the boot or glove box. Although the idea is still cool.
