Hey all, I'm usually a very knowledgable person when it comes to pcs however this one has stumped me.

Now this is a strange thing, since yesterday I am unable to open or go to some websites and sign into messenger. The websites I cannot go to (which I've tried) at http://www.mac.com, http://www.bt.com (Ironic, but it does load the header only), I cannot sign into MSN Messenger, nor MSN Explorer, I cannot connect to http://www.animeofficial.com's FTP.
This is really strange... I guess it means something is blocked?
Can somebody suggest anything?
I'm with BT Broadband and the settings all seem to be fine. I've not changed anything, I've run for Spyware, I've run an Anti-Virus scan, and I've tried to System to restore to a week ago.

quick update:
connected to a neighbours network just to see if it was my router, but they've got a Belkin and it wont even sign into messenger or go to any of the sites I mentioned.
So I guess that means there is something on my pc I need to change?

Sounds crazy, I know, but check your DNS settings. I recently got hit my some spyware which changed the DNS settings on the PC. The target DNS could resolve most sites, but obviously couldn't resolve the name of my other PC, which is how I noticed the problem.

I have done all the basics, restored, cleared the cache, cookies, reset the security, it's strange.
It might have to do with the DNS settings since running MSN Messenger's troubleshooter showed a few ports as blocked.
No spyware on my system though..

Well as a last resort i would suggest a format that should set everything back to normal...its possible you might have a Trojan on your PC.

yeah thats what I usually do, but I have too many programs that I cannot find the cds to, and it'd be a shame to lose everything.

But as you said, it's a last resort.

Spoke to an MSN tech guy, we've found it IS a DNS issue and it's damned BT that has a problem *sighs* guess I'll see tomorrow.

thank God MSN Messenger 8 has work arounds that compensate when you cant connect normally.

I had severe problems with Messenger 8..first it was working fine then as i tried to sign in with a different account it locked up on me,tried a few times to re-install but nothing,I then tried to sign in with my original account that i used and still nothing..I got so fed up in the end i removed the whole programme and now im back with the old 7.5....Guess i'll have to wait for the official version to be released now.

Check DNS and make sure port 6881 is open, some spyware closes the port 6881 and disables use of messenger, bit torrent, etc. If you are not sure how to open ports, visit

http://www.portforward.com/en[....]ort_forwarding/routerindex.htm

Locate your modem and download the program

here is the solution for the future.

disconnect your router and connect with the username of
bt_test@startup_domain

no password

connect, leave it for a few moments.

then disconnect.

Reconnect with another username (NOT what you had before)
something like.
esato.iscool@btbroadband.com
(has to be in that format)
then connect.

The problem is with a certain IP range that BT doesn't accept and your pc selects (to be annoying)
