Crumbs, can you imagine negotiating this on your driving test? The local council's planning department should be shot. Unbelievable! Why didnt they just put in one large roundabout? Crazy.

Right, obviously Swindon City Council are so ashamed of it they haven't mentioned it once on their website. Nothing. No reasoning as to why it exists, when an ordinary roundabout would probably have sufficed. Hmmm. Anyone know why they put so much effort into it? Maybe they had money left at the end of the budget, maybe they wanted to be "stylish and futuristic", heck, maybe they got wasted at the christmas party and changed the plans. Who knows?

They were probably too stingy to make one big roundabout (one out of concrete), so just painted small roundabouts instead.

I just noticed something about that roundabout. It's two way. Roundabouts are usually one way (for obvious safety reasons). This roundabout is two way, and the small roundabouts offer safe entry and exit for the internal roundabout, which flows in the opposite direction to the outside roundabout. The little roundabouts are all one way, and they all go in the same direction.
In this style of roundabout, you can turn to the right without going around the entire roundabout. Maybe this sort of design would have a higher traffic throughput than a large one way roundabout?

Yeah, maybe, but i would have thought it really wasnt worth the effort...there are only two or three in Britain - nay, the world - and most people unfamiliar with it will look at it and go "Well, coat me in chocolate and call me a Mars Bar, whats going on here?"
