> Philips and Sony team up for wireless
Bookmark topic
We already have Wi-Fi, or 802.11b, and Bluetooth. Do we really need another mind-boggling wireless networking standard? Philips Electronics and Sony seem to think so. The two companies have agreed to jointly create a radio frequency technology, called "Near Field Communication" (NFC), and jointly manufacture devices that use it. Capable of short-range communication at 20 centimeters with speeds of up to 212kbps, NFC is targetted at devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and handheld computers. NFC doesn't require "permissions" before making a connection between devices, making it suitable for snap transactions and transfers. We think the wireless alphabet soup is thick enough as it is, but Sony and Philips, with their clout, just might push this through
