> Purchase of Telcel Amigo gsm sim card before going to Mexico?
Bookmark topic
Hi there... would be very grateful for any help.
I'm going to Mexico in a month or so and would like to get a couple of Telcel Amigo GSM SIM cards before I get there so I can start to use them as soon as I cross the border. There are some web sites that sell these cards for about US$40 which I think is a rip-off; posts elsewhere seem to indicate they are available for about US$8 if you go to a Telcel shop. So my question is does anyone know where I can get these cards before I get to Mexico at the real Mexican prices? Either buying online or in Phoenix, AZ would be fine. Does anyone know what the price of these cards are in Mexico? I have two tri-band unlocked GSM phones so I just need the SIM.
Thanks everyone..!

As soon as you hit the border (Tijuana / Nogales or wherever town is at the border), you'll see a ton of Telcel shops. They're as abundant as Starbucks. Just stop by and ask for one, they usually run about 8-10 dollars. Good luck!

@RichLok
Thanks that's useful advice; I guess they are used to dealing with tourists in those areas and will probably speak a bit of English? I'm just paranoid about getting ripped off!

I have a european GSM tri band phone and will be traveling to Mexico next week. Can I buy a SIM card to use in my phone when I'm there? I read that Telcel is the only GSM provider but I can't read their site to find out if they offer SIM cards (for the phone number) and then prepaid cards (with minutes) for making calls. That's how it works in Europe but I'm not sure about mexico. does anyone know?
thanks

Yes, you can buy a Telcel sim and use it with ur phone, only if ur phone its unlocked, and yes the only gsm providers in mexico, are movistar(its a shit, i dont recommend this mobile operator) and Telcel (Not excellent but beats movistar)!!, i dont know in others countrys but in mexico u cant use gprs with prepaid, so u can only use gprs in contracts!!! and the sims are about $8 DLS, without prepaid time

Hello, my group has a Nokia GSM cell that we use in Baja, Mexico between Tecate and Ensenada. The SIM card is used to identify the phone to the system, as well as to provide a phone number that you use. This phone, purchased from Nokia via internet, had a USA SIM CARD. I purchased the SIM card in Ensenada at a Telcel Store. In addition, you need to purchase what I call "time cards" These are the yellow-blue Telcel "Amigo" cards, usually called "fichas" that come in different prices. Our cards say " Region 1" at the front, top right side -- and usually have a date on the back, lower right side. After activation by entering the hidden code number, the 100 Peso ( $10 USD) cards we buy are usable for the earliest occurrence of either 60 days or when you have used the value of the card in Pesos. Also, you can add more time/Peso value by entering a code from another new "amigo " card. Dialing *333, option 1, gets you the peso balance and aslo indicates the date of latest use. My experience with the system is: calling another Mexico cell in the same region costs about $.35 US a minute. Calling to the US costs you $1.50 US ( 15 Pesos ) a minute.
