I asked around (cycovision and a few other IT people) and was told AVG anti virus is the best program to use and it is free aswell.
Not tried it myself yet but i know alot of people who use it.

AVG free edition has always done the job for me just fine! as long as you surf the internet with a bit of caution then free applications like this are just fine. If however you want to be 100% sure and have a nice simple and easy interface then the likes of mcaffee and norton/symantec are quite good (eat up your system resources like mad though!) stay well clear of panda antivirus. conflicted with almost everything, wouldnt unistall - NO replies to my emails to customer support. Took me bloody ages to sort out!

How do you know that it's not picking them all up? Do you mean that it's finding them but can't remove / heal them or have you scanned your hard drive on a PC using a different AV package?
Reason I ask is that there is a very fine line between viruses and adware / spyware. Many trojans are now considered to be spyware rather than viruses and as such, they don't make it into a lot of AV program's definition files.
This is why it's vital to run antispyware apps regularly as well as maintaining your AV. The only downside of the free AVG is that the update servers go down quite regularly, leaving your PC at a slight risk for a few days whilst they get them back online. The pro version uses dedicated servers that are hardly ever down.
Problem is, if you reckon that AVG is slowing your PC down then Norton or Mcaffee will positively kill it altogether! It might be worth unistalling and reinstalling the latest release of AVG since, if it's slowing your PC down and not working properly, there might be a problem with the app itself.
Have you got any other security apps running in the background? Webroot spysweeper, Microsoft Antispyware or Ewido, for example?
EDIT: ZoneAlarm is great, I've installed it on tons of PCs and never had any probs at all

It's possible that a virus could have slipped through the net, although I do know that Microsoft Antispyware is next to useless! Have you scanned it with Adaware, Spybot S+D etc. recently?
If you like, you could download
hijack this, run it, save the logfile and post it here for us to have a look at. Most slowdown problems that are software related can be spotted from there.

PC's just go like that over time. It is recomended quite often that you carry out an annual reformat of your hardrive and start over. As your pc gets clogged up with left over files from programms you have installed and old registry keys etc etc. Plus if you have got spyware this will sort it out. p.s. download the trial of webroot spysweeper. This prog is excellent at detecting spyware and will tell you if you have any for free. (you then need to purchase it if you want webroot to remove the spyware)
Tom
EDIT: forgot to mention you could have a look in msconfig and see what is starting up when you boot up your pc. i bet you have loads of uneccessary apps booting up in the background which will slow down your comp!
