Hi,

never seen an 'only-in-japan ericssons' phone. Sony Ericssons yes.

What do you want one for? Looks, wow factor or to send and receive emails in Japanese?

You can get and use but you will not be able to do somethings.

I use a Vodafone V800 and changed the faceplates on it. GBrooks3 reflashed it to the Japanese firmware and added a Japanese keypad that I was given.

I use the internet, send sms in Japanese, English, Spanish and Portuguese, synch it with Outlook. etc

BUT..... I cannot access pop/IMAP email so well even with the Java email applets that are avaiable.

You can get unlocked phones from Japan but be aware not ALL Japanese handsets have sim cards for you to change, and those that do mis-behave, even when unlocked, when a different SIM card is inserted.

good luck!

@chuckli0506

Your best bet would almost certainly be ebay since buying a new handset from Japan is quite difficult unless you live in Japan. Japan doesn't have much in the way of PAYG and I believe they are actually phasing out what PAYG they do have.

If you know someone who lives in Japan they could perhaps send you an old handset, but unless a Japanese handset is WCDMA compliant it won't work anywhere except Japan. It is also worth knowing that whilst DoCoMo's FOMA is a WCDMA variant it isn't compatible with standard WCDMA yet.

interestingly, or not.... all of my Japanese friends hand back their old handsets! Maybe for recycling, but not sure...

I know most use Docomo or AU and the models handed back do not have sims anyway so they become of not use after the uograde is done...

I will ask a friend or three in email about what they do.
