japan phone got one common disadvantage. It is all of them also have external antena. Maybe this is a "must" for their network.

I really dun mind the antenna. But we won't be seeing them. They are only suited for the networks in japan. Non compatible out of the country. Damn...

Another funny thing is, those phones are ALL over a year old. The second and the third with headphones came out in November/December 2000!
Sony are not the big draw for mobiles in Japan, all manufacturers make phones that look like that. They are one of the few (only) manucacturers that have yet to release a camera phone in the market on either of the networks they make phones for (AU & DoCoMo), I think it might be because they feel it would hurt their Digital Camera sales. I cant think of another reason..

Yes. Those are au and docomo phones, manufactured by sony and are at least a year old. But they boast high definition colour, support mp3 playback, web browser and advanced games. As for the camera, many phones do have them but not there particular models.

At the last count every major Japanese manucacturer, and even some minor ones had camera phones.
NEC (J-N05, N251i)
Panasonic (J-P51, P2101v, P751v)
Sharp (J-SH06, J-SH07, J-SH08, J-SH51, J-SH09, J-SH52, SH251i)
Sanyo (A1014ST, A3015SA, J-SA03 (which Nokia sold under their own brand, as J-NM01))
Mitsubishi (D251i, J-D06)
Fujitsu (F251i)
Toshiba (J-T51, J-T07, A5301T)
Casio (A3012CA)
Kyocera (A1013K)
Kenwood (J-K51)
That is over 25 camera phones on the market, many of which can send video clips with sound, but none from the worlds largest electronics firm on their home territory.
Does anyone know the reason for this?

In Japan, mobile phone networks decide what specification they want from handsets. Manufacturers only produce handsets that will match the required spec for the particular network. This is why NTTDoCoMo phones are incompatible with J-phone/Vodafone, despite both of them utilising the same PDC network. So, if a non-Japanese manufacturer wants to sell a handset there, it has to produce a handset that will only be sold in Japan and only through one network. Unless you are really committed to the Japanese market, you would not do that. You just won't make profits. Nokia and Motorola used to produce handsets in japan, but their activities are now diminished.
Things will be changed soon, however, because Vodafone has moved into Japanese market. They changed their 3G spec so that it can match the rest of the world. They have ordered handsets from Nokia and Motorola. You will be able to swap SIM cards with any GSM/W-CDMA handset you get outside Japan. This means manufacturers do not have to produce anything specifically for Japan (apart from the Japanese language software). NTTDoCoMo has not done that. They only use NEC, Panasonic, Mitsubishi and Sharp. Indeed, FOMA network is not compatible with 3G spec you get ourside Japan.
I think this is the reason why we see so few non-Japanese manufacturers there.
