Is there any way to shut off system alert sounds, like the battery nearly empty beep, without shutting off all call and message sounds by pressing the "C" key?

No, the only way, as you say, is to turn off the sounds and alerts. Basically turn on "silent".
You could do that, leave the vibrating on, stick your phone in your jeans, and enjoy each incoming call.

hm, this is what I do. Seems, although the software offers lots of features, there is still room to improve the little things. I am a bit spoilt by Siemens mobiles....
