I bought this unit a day before Christmas. Love it so much compared to my previous Moto C650.
3rd day of use, it showed 'OPERATION FAILED' when I tried to access picture folder. I reset the phone and when I went to Pictures folder, all the pictures taken during that few days is gone. Fine. Then I installed/uninstalled many applications and games. Just to test and select which is suitable to me. One day, out of the blue, I can't open the games folder. 'OPERATION FAILED' again. So, I reset the phone again, then the games folder was empty. All and I mean ALL the games are gone. Fine! Then I still kept viewing new games and apps and it 'OPERATION FAILED' again. This time, whatever I did, both Games and Apps folders showed 'OPS FAILED'.
Called the service center, the guy said I have to bring the phone to them for software upgrade. I did and the phone back to normal but all other installed apps/games, sms, phone contacts, reminders (I have a lot), etc, are gone. Luckily already backs them up.
I forgot to jot down the previous software version but this new version (CXC 1250085 R4BA041 000000) has much bigger, more readable font for 'Phone Stats' and 'Reminder' details.
BUT, I still cant see the GPRS service availability on top of the signal strength bars like other SE phones. Do I need more upgrades?
Has anyone encountered the same problem as I did? Is mine the only one with this problem? Please share.

Hmmm, could well be a software problem, or it could be a problem with one of the memory chips, a la 6230.
If it's the latter, there's not much you can do, if it's the former, you should still be covered under the warranty and be able to send the phone to SE or wherever you (or whoever got it for you for xmas) got the phone from for them to sort.

Any idea on why I cant see the GPRS service availability on top of the signal strength bars (normally a thin blue line on top of signal bars). Is W550i does not show it at all?

You can turn the gprs always on by going to connectivity - gprs - network priority (or something like that) and select gprs always on
