> Mathematical Formula Help!
Bookmark topic
It's quite a long time since I did any 'proper' maths, so I'm having trouble working out a formula for the following:
----
Person (A) and (B) earn different amounts, and they share the household bills (Z).
How can you work out what each persons proportionate share of the bills should be based on what they earn.
For example:-
(A) earns $2000 a month
(B) earns $1000 a month, 50% of what (A) earns
Their total monthly bills (Z) are $900
So, (B) should pay 50% of what (A) pays.
In this example, (A) would pay $600 and (B) would pay $300 (50%)
----
What mathematical formula would do this calculation for different values of (A), (B) and (Z) ?
When the values are easy, as in the example above, I can work it out, but not for very different values!! It's probably very easy... but...
Help!

Ratio and proportion should work -- base it on the total of A & B's salaries.
Something like this should work:
A=salary of A
B=salary of B
Z=total monthly bill
SA = A's share of the monthly bill
SB = B's share of the monthly bill
SA=Z*A/(A+B)
SB=Z*B/(A+B)

My share:
Share of A: Share of B:
A (Z) B (Z)
_____ + ______ = Z
(A+B) (A+B)
(*)
A = salary of A
B = salary of B
Z = total monthly bill
SA = A's share of the monthly bill
SB = B's share of the monthly bill
(*) - same with Blackspot

Thanks guys! That's great! I don't actually understand how it works out right, but it does - perfectly!
You've saved me a lot of head scratching!!
Cheers!
