where in the world does this work, if i bought a dual band phone in the UK?
i thought for uk phones:
band - uk
dual band - uk+europe
tri band - uk+europe+usa
quad band - world
correct?
sorry, just concerned when thinking about k800 and k790, can't choose between 3g or tri band and edge...?

GSM phones were originally single band and that was 900mhz. This was available in Europe, alot of Asia and Australia/NZ
frequencies were getting filled so a second band was added which was 1800 and so phones were made to be dual band in order to give greater saleability and usability. In UK I recall that Orange and another used the 1800mhz frequency while cellnet and vodafone use 900mhz. Generally you were stuck with the frequency of your network but if you roamed to another country you could usually connect to carriers using a different frequency
then people started to travel more and wanted compatibility with US so tri band phones came along with not only 900 and 1800mhz but also 1900mhz
finally, US (and possibly elsewhere) introduced the 850mhz band and so quad band phones were born to give full coverage.
when 3g (UMTS) became available then we started to see dual mode (as opposed to dual band) phones, which could operate on the UMTS (2100mhz I think) frequency as well as two or more (usually) of the GSM frequencies
I'm not sure about edge but GPRS is carried on the same GSM frequency that you are connected to your network on

K800i is 3G and triband, K790i is Edge and Triband.

doesn't the specs say that k950 is triband and edge,
and
k800 3g and dual band???

correct me if i've got it all wrong but, on esato it says:
K800i - Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz for Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa
K800c - Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz for Mainland China. (Launch dependent on availability of 3G services.)
K790i Tri Band EDGE 900/1800/1900 MHz for Europe, Asia Pacific, Americas
K790a Tri Band EDGE 850/1800/1900 MHz for Americas
K790c Tri Band EDGE 900/1800/1900 MHz for Mainland China
i've probably misunderstood it all, if thats the case sorry.

I was also told by a guy in a local shop whilst researching to see if I could use a w800i here in the states with decent reception (since it only uses the 1900 mhz that we have here, but not the 850) that the 1900 mhz is more suited to clearer reception over long distances whereas the 850 is better suited to building penetration and so forth. It made sense to me since the bass from your subwoofer will go thru walls etc, but the tweeters are a lot clearer.
My w800i does exactly that. good reception all around town, but in large buildings I lose my signal easily.

yes, I plan on getting it as soon as it comes out, i'm looking forward to EDGE too. Hopefully for me it gets picked up by cingular, though I've heard the rumor that they have an exclusive contract with Motorola for candybar phones.
