I don't know what happened, but suddently it wouldn't start. I've removed the batery and then it turned on with a message that the filesystem was corrupted and that it would have to be formated. I've allowed it (it hadn't any other option, though) and it removed everything. 4 years of hard use, no backup, just lost everything. Even the language is lost. The original was portuguese, when i bought the phone, now i get the english one. My question is: is ot possible, in any way, to recover any of the information? I lost all my contacts, all my messages, all my jotters, and i really need that information. Is there any "unformat" tool available?
Thanks, and go make a backup, fast!

Afraid not, there's no special tool at all. You *might* be able to take it into SE but even then I doubt they can help, the memory in the phone is just flash memory and once it gets corrupted and reformatted, there's no way to recover information from it.
The only thing to do is remember to backup on a regular basis.

Surprised it lasted four years. Was it running the last ever firmware?

i`m sorry, but you must agree with the fact: you`ve lost it forever. there is no way to restore that data

Yes. I bought it in April, 2003. It has the R1D firmware, and it has been working great, no problems at all. But suddendly...

then now you should upgrade your firmware in SE service, before any instalations/setup etc. (coz you`ll lose it all again)

Yeah, i think anything involving technology is pretty unpredictable. Always, always backup. I once lost some backup files on an external hard-disk and that was really frustrating. Now's a good time to upgrade your firmware though. Before you start installing your stuff again.

Sadly it sounds like an object lesson in regular backups, I backed my P800 and P900 up regularly when I had them just in case.
Often it takes a catastrophic loss of data to learn that lesson sadly, I've done it a couple of times when doing uni assignments, then losing a couple of hours work when the computer blobbed on me!
