I'm just about to buy this Sony 40" LCD HD-ready tv
http://www.sony.co.uk/view/Sh[....]e=Overview&category=TVP+LCD+TV
However, I am unsure on a couple of points. Is it the best I can get for my money? I really want a screen that is clear, with an excellent picture. Are there other LCD's around £2000-2500 which have a better picture?
Also, Sony has quoted me £2,799.00. However, I have found much lower prices on the web ( e.g.
http://www.pricegrabber.co.uk[....]id=17436748&search=kdl+w40a12u where prices are as little as £2,247.95).
The most expensive thing I have ever bought on-line is probably my iPod (£219), so I'm a bit nervous about ordering something worth over £2000 on the net. Does anyone have any advice?
I would really appreciate it if anyone has input on LCD's in general, ordering expensive items online or HDTV in general (basically any input is welcome)

The only thing i could tell you is that Sony official sites ands stores are very expensive compared to others. My advice is to buy from a regular store. LG lcds are very good IMO

to be honnest, as long as the firm you buy from is good its all good, you can always return it, but id hate to see the postage lol.
Generally those hdtv the more you pay, the better it will be, but obviously this will vary depending on branding say a philips one that costs 1000, may be better then a 1500 one from sony as sony has a stronger brand and can charge more.
ALso I havent looked at your links, but lots of lcd screens as HD ready which means they have a hd port on the back, but the actual amount of pixels does not qualify to be hd

Thanks very much to rrojas260 & Luke, advice happily taken. Any other input would be greatly apreciated, as I don't want to waste over £2,000 on a wrong LCD.

A friend just recently bought the 32" Bravia and i have to say I'm well impressed by it. Both as a monitor and as a TV. (He's trying hard not to use it as a monitor but loves it as one

called the other day cos he said he needs a second one to use as a tv.. sheesh!)
The biggest thing is to go out and look at the picture you're going to get before you get the TV so you know you'll be happy with it. I just bought a 43" rear projection over christmas and while it looked great in store, some broadcasts look a little bad on it. Some of that is also because I'm at a close distance to it though. But yeah, be happy in what you buy before paying alot

Before you part with your money, take some time and look at what other users say about the LCD tv here.

I'd wait for 1080 Progressive models to come out so you an take full advantage of blu-ray and the PS3.

Thanks everyone for your input (much appreciated and very useful).
Having done some more research, it now seems that the Sony I was going to go for will be superceeded by a new model very soon ( I suppose that's the way it always goes... ). Until I started looking into it, I had no idea there were so many factors to consider when buying a new telly! (I previously had B&O, and that was purely for the design) Now I'm a bit more interested in the performance of the screen (having seen a not to impressive performance on a B&O LCD).
Actually more confused than before, but guess I'll read up on avforums.com (Cheers for that link pmerryman), and take other advice into consideration.

And remember to look for reliable reviews.
cnet.com.au has some reviews on the Sony and others
