The UK government has threatened to cancel an order for US built Joint Strike Fighter jets unless America turns over the source-code for the jets firmware.Britain is worried that the jets could contain back doors that let the US remotely disable them.

do your devices take orders from you or someone else? Whether it's the box on top of your TV, the phone in your pocket, or the fighter jet in the hangar, no one wants to own a device that can be 0wned by its manufacturer or whomever that vendor sells you out to.

those bastards, thats achually a real problem, if Tony stopped bum worshiping bush and uk/us went to war with eachother, being able to disable jets could cause huge problems, I really don't see why we don't make our ouwn jets, the uk used to own most of the world, we should be good at something these days

yes this is very annoying and yet another example of America thinking that they rule the world and every country on it and the right to do whatever they please. However i dont see this as much of a problem. The US and UK will never go to war against each other, and if they did then a few of our jets being disabeled would be the least of our worries as it would probably litteraly be the end of the world anyway with the destruction that war would cause. And as you so rightly put it the uk are too busy bumming america to even consider upsetting them let alone threatening them.

As for why we don't build our own jets - firstly manufacturing in this country is dead and secondly we can't afford it. the british military or the british gov does not have enough money to single handedly finance a complete development programme for a new fighter jet - hence the eurofighter project.

America should give us the bloody jets for free anyway cos they will only ever be used to fight american war's.

exactly,we have some of the best engineers and technicians here in our own country why buy something inferior from the U.S?..I don't know what happened to this country, like you said we used to run the world now we have have to depend on others for technology...this country is becoming more and more dependent on the other countrys specially the U.S...the U.K once upon a time used to produce some of the best cars in the world i.e: Aston Martin,Rolls Royce,Jaguar which are now owned by foreign companys..We have lost our craftmanship and sold it on to others..somone needs to wake up in this country (blair wakey wakey) and bring back the glory days when the U.K was'nt joined at the hip with the U.S.

Makes you wonder about other US- bought hardware like Apache helicopter gunships too!

The US has a disproportionate amount of power in the world, meaning it can do whatever it wants almost without fear. there needs to be another superpower to counterbalance this

we don't need another superpower - another america is the last thing this world needs - the cold war ring any bells? could easily have been WW3. What we really need is for the UN to grow some balls and put america back in it's place and prosecute them for breaking internartional law etc etc. America needs the rest of the world, especially Europe, as we help keep their economy going with the products and services we buy from them. We just need to play tougher and play america at their own game i.e. tax them on their exports to the E.U etc

I absolutely agree,I think it was better at the height of the cold with the then U.S.S.R at least that kept the americans at bay and not have them throw their weight around as they do now...But i believe China is emerging at the next super power so that should give them something to think about.

I have read somewhere that the U.S always sells downgraded military jets to the U.K and other countrys anyway so this comes as no surprise really if thats true...But if i would be very concerned if the software running my equipment (specially defence weapons) were at the mercy of others.

China is like this big beast.
Sitting.
Waiting.

Until it'll finally be able to become a super power by controlling the worlds reliance on it.

Yep, the Chinese economy is growing at an amazing rate, despite the Asia economic crisis... and as it grows it's military and political prestige grows along with it. Now China is adopting a more aggressive military stance that may allow it to challenge the United States' position as the dominant power in Asia and perhaps on the globe pretty soon.

If you think about it China has expanded its national security objectives and changed its patterns in the use of military force.

It is also developing a modern war machine and sea control capability, and is attempting to build an anti-American and anti-West alliance.
