Hi

I would like to gather all intelligence about Fonts on the P series.

I posted two articles on my site how to get them installed and how to use them. I would update my articles based on what I learn from the outcome of this thread.

So far what I understand is here:

http://celifornia.com/linux/article.php?story=20060311073514811

This one is about FreeType fonts.

http://celifornia.com/linux/article.php?story=20060311013149563

And this one above is about the Linnea.gdr and how to get Asian fonts available.

####################

Now what I already learned is that with the Linnea.gdr and perhaps with other .gdr files the built-in Browser will be impossible to use.

Another thing I learned is that I can make Special Japanese (perhaps other languages would work also) characters display with just using a TTF and Freetype.sis, and no need to use the .gdr file.

However I have tons of questions still unanswered.

How will the phone decide what font to use?

For example, I installed the JA.ttf which is a Japanese Kochi-Mincho font, and I made it default with SMan. I rebooted, and the phone was able to display Japanese. However, when I went to Word, and opened English documents, quikword used a completely different font to display the English contents, and it didnt use the JA.ttf which was default. I had a font called "Japanese Brush" which is kind of artistic and hard to read. This font wasnt default by any means, it was just placed in d:/system/fonts folder, and quickword picked this to show the Word file. There were 3-4 other fonts in the same folder as well.

What makes Quickoffice choose the specific font?

Another question:

I didnt like the font I used by default, as it didnt show roman characters nicely, but it was necessary to display Japanese. Is there a way to use a normal font as a system font, like Arial, and when I want to display special characters, use another one?

If now, is it possible to edit a font, like the Japanese font I want to use for Japanese characters? I would like to remove the Roman characters and add in new ones from another font.

Thanks for any pointers and help. I am really confused about fonts now

Ben
