> Will flashing a W550i unblock it ?
Bookmark topic
I brought a W550i from ebay just over a month ago, I tested it as soon as I got it but its blocked (proberbly stolen or someone tryed to get a 2nd phone by saying this one was lost/stolen)
The day it arrived I went on holiday to thailand so I couldnt do anything about it, Now im back I have contacted the seller and am in the prosses of getting a refund threw paypal ( the seller hasnt contacted me since I filed the dispute with paypal, I know if he has no money in his account the chances of me getting all my money back is slim)
I was reading another forum today and a user mentioned that if your phone is BLOCKED (not locked) you can flash the firmware and it will become unblocked. Is the any truth behind this ?? and if so what steps would I need to take to flash my W550i so that I can use it.
I tryed to search the forum before posting but was unable to find anything relevant to what im looking for. If the is information on this forum please point me in the right direction.

Unblocking phones is illegal I believe.

A blocked phone is blocked by the network and not on the phone itself. The network has a list of blocked IMEI numbers. If your phone is on that list then the network will not let the phone use the network.
The only way to unblock the phone is to make the network think that it is a different phone by changing the IMEI. Changing the IMEI is illegal in most conutries and is not easily done anyway.

So it is possible (although hard to do), but its not legal to do so, is that correct ???
I dont want to get in trouble, I just dont want to have paid for a brick incase i dont get a refund.

That is correct. It is possible to unblock it but it is not easy and is illegal.
