This book American Theocracy: "The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion,Oil,and Borrowed Money in the 21stCentury" by Kevin Phillips,no lefty, says that America addicted to oil,and its religious right, strangled by debt is headed for doom.

If Phillips is correct, the coming years are going to be ugly for all Americans, not just blithe exurbanites with SUVs and floating-rate mortgages. With oil growing scarce and America unable or unwilling to even begin weaning itself away,we could see a future of resource wars that would inflame jihadi terrorism and bankrupt the country, shredding what's left of the social safety net.As Phillips notes, a collapsed economy would leave many debt-ridden Americans as what Democratic leaders have called "modern-day indentured servants," paying back constantly compounding debt with no hope of escape via bankruptcy. The prospect of social breakdown looms. The desperation of New Orleans could end up being a preview.

Kinda reminds me of the book Syriana was based on. Anyway, they got oil left in the USA but I think they are keeping it in reserve and besides i'm sure there's loads of oil in unchartered lands.

This is the problem, the oil is a limited commodity and WILL run out, last I heard we have 50-100 years worth left, so we could see the fallout of supplies running out.

To me, far too little is being done to find alternative renewable supplies. I hear stories of oil companies buying up any new inventions like cars that could run on something renewable, then you never hear about it again. If anyone comes up with anything like that, these companies know they will simply be destroyed when people realise they don't have to pay a huge amount for petrol

What worries me is the West's dependence on oil. When I come to buying a new car I'd love to buy one of those Toyota Priuses so if there is a petrol crisis I can simply flick to battery power and still get around!

Slightly off topic I think so I apologise!

sammy_boy, some good points there

but i'm quite sure they have got alternatives ie: the electric car, but didnt that get bought (copyright) by esso or someone (cant rememebr exactly sorry).... at the end of teh day, the money guzzling gov's out there wanna ripping us off and the best way to do it is through oil..... so i reckon we'll run out even faster that predicted......
