Dude, you're a bit vague regarding the type of laptop you have (ie. Model number etc) and how old it is. I assume you bought it from Dell.

Anyway, Dell machines usually have a hidden partition that contains the xp setup files.

Start the machine up and at the Dell splash screen press and hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard, press the F11 key, then release them both at the same time. The Dell PC Restore by Symantec screen should appear. Select the restore option. Use TAB key to move around.

Hope this helps, else give feedback and more comments and info.

laptop manufacturers who use an EISA partition to store the recovery info usually provide a utility in windows to create the recovery CDs or DVDs from the info stored in that partition

so take a look through your start menu for something like that.

I only use Vaio's and thats what Sony do anyway but Dell must do something similar because otherwise how else would the average user access that partition?

its a really cheap of the manufacturers IMHO since they just save a couple of quid from not providing the recovery discs in the box, as they used to. Its also dangerous as I'm sure most users don't create the recovery discs and once the system goes faulty and you cannot access the utility to create the discs then you are stuffed!

Go to start, all programs, dell accessories, and open Dell OS Recovery CD.

Some laptops won't burn the OS properly, if so go to dell online help, and you'll be able to talk to a guy like on msn. Tell him/her your not able to burn the OS properly, they'll tell you to check a few things, if it still doesn't work they will send you the XP CD.
