Model flipped in row over jeans for Oprah

SUPERMODEL Naomi Campbell denied assaulting her housekeeper when she appeared in a New York court today.

She is accused of attacking the woman with a mobile phone when she could not find her jeans while getting ready to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show.

The housekeeper needed four stitches in her head after the incident, which prosecutors said happened after Campbell accused her of stealing her clothes.

She was arrested at her Park Avenue home yesterday at 11am, three hours after the alleged attack on the 41-year-old Hispanic woman, identified as Amie.

Police charged Campbell, 35, with second-degree assault.

If found guilty, she could face at least one year in jail. She could also face deportation and be stopped from re-entering America.

Assistant district attorney Elina Kreditor told Manhattan Criminal Court: "The defendant was preparing for an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show and could not locate her jeans.

"She accused her housekeeper of stealing. As she was walking downstairs, the defendant threw a cell phone at her head."

The judge denied a request for Campbell to surrender her passport after hearing she was due to fly to South Africa later today on a charity trip.

Her lawyer, David Breitbart, claimed that stopping her travelling would be unfair on "all the children she would be helping". She must appear in court again in June.

Campbell is notorious for her temper and has been accused of previous attacks.

In 2000, she pleaded guilty to beating an assistant.

Police were called to her New York apartment after she allegedly fought with maid Millicent Burton, 44.

Actress Yvonne Scio, 37, also claimed the model left her "covered in blood" at a Rome hotel last year.
