The UK is slowly succumbing to a creeping bureaucracy. £30 fines for putting your wheelie bins out on the wrong day, Anti-social behaviour orders for having a loud car stereo, 3 penalty points for throwing chewing gum out a car window...and now, Biometric I.D. Cards. This thread aims to examine the pros and cons of such a device.

Why is it going to cost so much?

Could the Home Secretary explain to me how biometric checks on iris patterns and fingerprints are going to help keep tabs on muslim cleric Abu Hamza?

I dont see what the fuss is all about with the Biometric Id system. If you are a good law abiding citizen like myself, then you have nothing to worry about. As for the cost, now that is another matter.

The guy has got no arms or eyes, so some bright spark says "lets use eye scans and fingerprints as the benchmark! AND, the gullible public will love us for it!"

Woop-de-doo!

Honestly, its no wonder Brits are emigrating in their tens of thousands every year...

Biometric I.D. Cards are a waste of public money...and it won't stop who the government is trying to deter,..Terrorists will always find a way,Spain has always had I.D cards it didn't stop the train bombings there..i suspect it won't be long before fake I.D cards will be selling from some dodgy site somewhere..and heaven forbid ebay.

Our government needs to change its foreign policys i.e: (leave Iraq/afghanistan,stop supporting the U.S) in order to stop international terrorism rather than punish the british public with these pathetic laws.

Needless to say Abu Hamza is the only person who would be more than happy with the Iris and fingerprint scan.

Ahem...
My work is all about Auto-ID so let me shed some light.

ID Cards are much different than normal paper ID cards (like we have here in Portugal)

With biometrics data encoded inside the card, a validation can be made between the guy that is using the card and the guy indentified INSIDE the card.

There are security issues about those cards, but one of the most popular standard is Philips MIFARE I which allows 48 bits protection for each sector in the card (up to 32).

The things is how to avoid the security disclosure (revealing keys used to write/read those cards).

I definitely do not oppose to biometrics use.

P.S.-Any question you have about this .... feel free to ask.

Do they have these I.D. cards in Portugal, then? What benefits do they bring? How are they used? How often are they checked? Who checks them? What sort of reaction was there when they were introduced?
