You can use the free Wireless Village Server from http://www.yamigo.com/ .
Just register and after that you can add your instant-message-details:

Yahoo User ID:
Yahoo Password:
MSN User ID:
MSN Password:
AIM User ID:
AIM Password:
ICQ User ID:
ICQ Password:

Now it's time to setup your SonyEricsson

In the SonyEricsson phones, the IM Client configuration resides under the My Friends application on the mobile phone, under the menu option More/Accounts.

The configuration settings you need to enter are:

* Username - This setting should contain the name of the user account obtained from the Yamigo Server.
* Domain - This setting should be left blank or you can enter yamigo.com (any other domain will be rejected at login).
* Password - This setting should contain the password of the user account defined on the Yamigo Server.
* Server - http://yamigo.com/wv/control
* Internet Profile - This setting points to an existing internet profile configured on the mobile phone. Use an appropriate profile that will facilitate connectivity to the HTTP URL of the Yamigo IMPS Server.
* Allow Connection - This setting allows you to specify whether the IM Client can be used when connected to any network, or if it should only be used when connected to your home network operator. Specify Home Network in most cases to avoid unexpected, and often exorbitant, data roaming charges.

Some SonyEricsson phones will have additional settings, such as Check Interval which specifies an interval in seconds for polling the IMP Server. Please refer to the documentation for your mobile phone for more information.

I posted some info and settings here.

Hope this helps.

Yamigo isn't very reliable these days, with people getting "Network Error" when trying to log on.

Smartvas seems to be a lot more reliable and faster but can only be used with msn messenger and not yahoo.

Using Yamigo in conjunction with my friends - is this a better alternative to getting a java-based chat program, would you say? Cheers.

@JasonD

Well I would say it was.

For instance, on my S700i I get an audio alert when I recieve a message.

I can also set it up to tell me when a certain person comes online and I can also use WAP and have My Friends running at the same time.

I haven't had good experiences with the Java clients. the interface simply isn't as good either.

Also, if you are using MSN, then Smartvas is simply faster.

Have you used My Friends?
