hi,

i know that this IS possible - but i don't want to waste money calling up vodafone helpline + then have them playing that they can't understand what i'm on about because they're chinese/indian or whatever...so can i just take my phone into any old vodafone shop and get it unlocked, or do i have to call vodafone up? - i know that this shouldn't void the warranty atall...but may...anyone work for vodafone, or done the same as me with the same or different phone?

If you don't want to void the warranty then you will have to speak to Vodafone. Take the handset into one of their shops that has a repair centre and ask them to unlock it for you. There may be a charge for this, usually around £20. However, if I recall correctly, they may wave the charge if you say you are going overseas for a while and need it unlocked. Don't take that last part as gospel though.

One more thing, the next time you post you might like to consider that Esato has a large number of members from India and I daresay there are a few Chinese people here too. Whilst I'm sure you have nothing against such people you might like to construct your posts in a way that doesn't make it look like you are insulting them.

thankyou very much. and i do know about the chinese community etc. on esato - and i am very sorry if i do hurt their feelings - but i am almost certain that vodafone have told the people that work in their call centres to say things like that. if anyone knows otherwise - then i am extremely sorry.

thanks again and i'll be going in there soon. erm...but if your going abroad, wouldn't they just want you to use their service still and pay extra money?

As I said I'm not terribly sure about the overseas gambit, it may work and it may not. I think the reasoning behind it is that if you say you are going overseas for several months rather than just a week or two it makes more sense for you to be using a local network abroad.

yeah ok - think i might try that as i've just had a quote from vodafone saying that as i haven't been a vodafone user for 12 months yet then i have to pay a fee of £19.99 - alright price i suppose - especially to keep the warranty - but may just wait the year, and then go over to virgin mobile (when they have their 3g sorted out) at the end of the year once i've been a user for 12 months - anyway - i'll still try it - doesn't really seem worth £19.99 when i could unlock it for free...but nevermind :S - well it is like about 500 texts int it? so maybe i'll just use that kinda money for texts till the end of this year - cuz i'm gonna have to text + call ALOT to get anything out of unlocking atm!

ok so your looking to unlock your phone and keep the warranty,
how cheap do you expect it to be? i think £20's not a lot of money considering you want KEEP the warranty. 2ndly ive used vodafone for ages and think they're call centres are fine, maybe the fact you think £20 is TOO much to unlock the phone, is clouding your judgement about the call centre workers.

im assuming you brought your phone pay as you go? the problem is you get the phone heavily subsided from the operator (the price sim free is quite expensive) so to recoup their costs they dont want you to run to another operator, so you can understand that they are going to charge you something.
secondly...about prices..it is a business unfortunately...the market dictates this, so if you dont like it...go elsewhere..im not happy with the price of diesel/mot/insurance/tax for my car, but i know i like the privilage of having it..so i put up with these costs.

as your only 13 i understand money is tight..maybe you should of gone for a cheaper phone? also you are going to get flamed if you make unjust comments.

To be fair there isn't a huge amount one can do where mobile networks are concerned because one is effectively limited to a certain pool of networks. The five main networks are all reasonably similar when it comes to pricing. Where you save with one you typically pay more for something else. The MVNOs can be cheaper, but they don't have as wide a selection of handsets and/or services as the main networks.

Texting is vastly overpriced in my opinion. I was once told by someone who worked for one of the big UK networks that it costs around 1p for the network to send a text, perhaps less. If you are being charged 10p per text, that's a rather hefty markup!

i know texting is vastly over priced...10p was the standard, now most do for 12p 20% increase is quite a bit

the OP should have thought about what he wanted his phone for...o2 still do 300 text per month.. three are always pretty cheap.

the thing is, whenever you make a desicion u have to think about everything.
eg when you get a contract...what price plan do you want, what phone do you want.

then u choose which one is more important to you. to me it is the phone.
the op chose a phone, then complained about the pricing, you cant have your cake and eat it.
