Phone battery is empty, it shows up as warning and when you are recharging the handset.

The reason for the LED to be orange is that both the red (charging/low power) and the green (network sync) is lit at the same time. This is proberbly happening because of a failure in the phones firmware. Try SEUS emergency recovery. This might cure the problem.

Does the update service need it to turn on? I didn't think it did on an emergency update.

use the DSS syncstation that you got with the phone. I'm relatively sure that when you plug it in, the SEUS service on "recovery" mode doesn't need to have the phone switched on. You will of course wipe the phone completely, so I hope you have a backup!
