> Symbian S60 used as a server !
Bookmark topic
Hello everyone. The more regular members of this forum probably know me as a Symbian S60 ( Not necessarely Nokia) and C/C++ fan. Now listen to this because I think it will send shock waves thru the cellular world. (at least advanced users) . Althou most things are free on the net - web space is not really. How would you like to configure your cell to work as a internet server ? If you have a S60 cellphone and the terms 'Apache' and 'Python' mean more then Indian and snake , then you can download a free application thanks to Nokia and transform your cell into a server ! With a cheap gprs, or better, edge/3g connection you can host your own site and stuff and be on the net. The cellphone is most of the time 'on' anyway. Also, if you give the necessary permission the net surfers can even take pictures with your phones cam ! Record sound etc. I really think this is the future of personal web hosting. Greetings from South Africa. Mario :D

Finally a use for S60 phones!
We get them all in a skip, connect them all up, and get a server as powerful as a ZX81! Brilliant!
I don't think I want to be the one paying the phone bill though.....

Yeah, that sounds way cool! I've always loved Symbian, but I think this just brings it to a whole new level. Thanks for keeping us updated @mario.

In principe should work but in practice won't because most of the S60 first edition have very little RAM (don't confuse with EEPROM or Expansion memory card !) Also a server needs some speed to 'serve' the net. Even on 'newer' devices you may find multitasking programs closing to free RAM and processor speed ! But yes all in all in works rather nicely. There are still a few things here and there after all a server/server protocol was not meant to take pictures (cell phone related stuff) . I personally believe this will take off like wilde fire among enthusiastic cell users. greetings from South Africa. Mario
