well, I was having discussing with my would-be-girlfriend about zooming in camera phones, I supported optical zoom (obviously) and she said that her cell phone has 4x zoom (digital) and complained about WHY my T630 didn't have zoom ?? I told her optical zoom is way better, but she doesn't understand. soo since I can't get my hands on one of those phones like Sharp 903 or the N93, I decided to work out my own method of optical zoom on T630
I dissarmed my old and 'willing' binocular and decided to play with the glasses, see pic: (taken with T630, sorry for quality)
there are two main glasses
a small one:
and a big glass:
I got really happy because optical zoom seemed to work fine with just the big glass, but because the screen is little, I dind't notice it was sort of blurry. see pic:
obviously the cuality is not so bad if the object is sort of near:
it's also good for close ups:
imagine that and macro mode on K750??
but now to focus on objects far away, such as my neighbour
regular pic:
pic with big glass on top of T630 lens: (becomes a bit blurry)
pic with th big lens a bit far away from T630 lens: (gets very blurry)
now with the small glass, haven't seen any other use for it before now. pic with only the small glass over T630 lens:
now the fusion!! small glass over T630 lens and big glass a bit away on maximum focus possible:
WOW, some detail at last!! Eureka!! I mean, that's what optical zoom is about right ?? lol. well there you have it, obviously the image samples would have been amazing with another camera phone, but don't blame my budget!! also another thing, the pics came out a bit blurry too because the glasses used had minimal scratches. what do you all think about this??

Nice. Actually, I've been doing this for about 25 years. Not with cellphones, obviously, but with ordinary cameras. Demounting a scope, mounting the lens in a cylinder of some kind, attaching it to the camera. With different lenses you can obtain just the "zoom level" you want.
Recently I did a test similar to yours with my SE W900i. Just aimed through a 40x60 spotting scope. The black part of the target on the picture is about 10 cm in diameter, and the picture is shot from a distance of about 65 metres. It's an international style target for rifle shooting. I'm sure I could have got a better picture by doing more tests, but anyway it shows some possibilities.

I did something kind of similar using my W800i and a pair of fixed focus 7x35 binoculars, except I didn't take them apart, I put the camera lens up to the eyepiece and took a picture. The only problems are it's a bit tricky to get the camera lens in the right position, get the binoculars in the right position for what you're taking a pic of, and I got the black 'circle' of the bins around the edge of the pic, but liked the pic quality:

yeah, I also used the binoculars without sacrificing, but the circle was just too little. but for me its a great achievement for my T630

anyway if I do it manually I can get 2x, 3x, etc, as far as it goes. wonder why sonyericsson doesn't implement this into cybershot phones as it seams pretty simple and sort of cheap to do ?
