I'm new to all of this ... just got a T68i and want to use it as a modem to connect my laptop to the internet.
I've spent a few hours reading on this great message board. Now from what I understand I've the options to connect using
- a serial data cable
- a USB data cable
- IR port
- bluetooth
is this correct? Of course I don't want the internet connection to be slowed down due to the connecting method I use, so I asume serial cable might be too slow??? Which one is the best solution?

My provider is T-Mobile and my service plan is "Talk and Text" (http://www.t-mobile.com/plans/national/talk_text_internet.asp)
Will this work or do I need to subscribe to something else?

And one more thing:
GPRS is like an always on connection, right? And they are my ISP? So if I was wanting to use AOL, I would connect through TCP-IP ?

And I can't just dial up to a local Internet access number without subscribing to data services?

The speed of internet connection is mostly limited by the slowness of your ISP/phone company.
The method you use to connect your phone to the pc is faster than the internet connection anyway, regardless if it's cable, IR or BT.

In order to use it as a modem, either thru gsm or gprs, you need to subscribe for the service from your phone company.

Gsm or gprs, depends on the cost plan of them, but gprs is faster and often cheaper.

I have the same dilemma with my T68i.

Accept I went ahead and bought a Bluetooth USB adapter for my laptop computer.

Installed the drivers and bonded it with my phone no problem.

Downloaded and installed the Sony-Ericsson tool which configures the phone as a modem properly.

My service provider supplies me with GPRS (4 megs a month for "any" kind of data connection I am told).... however, when I initiate a DUN call from the laptop to the T68i it initiates dial out from the phone, but then comes back with a "no answer".

I called AT&T Wireless and they claim that they have BLOCKED DUN through their GPRS gateway. Is that normal? They say that the only thing they will eventually offer other than a raw internet gateway with the laptop is some VPN support down the road.

This is pretty sad since one of the main reasons I got a bluetooth-GPRS phone was to get dialup access into my corporate LAN (where I have a lot of the tools I regularly use to do my job).

Any info on this would be appreciated.

If I would want to use my laptop and the T68i just to send a fax (not interested in mobile internet) would I still need to subscribe to GPRS ?

You can use your phone to send fax, just ask the provider to activate the highspeed data. Use Winfax Pro 9 or 10 and you can easily configure your modem(phone)

@jmpage2,

Within your DUN settings what phone number did you use?

@jmpage2,

What I'm using w/ AT&T for the phone number within the DUN setting is *99# (it's kinda pseudo gateway access number instead of real ISP#) if you going to use their GPRS, my experience was interactive text session is good but of course graphical kinda slow due to the speed.

Good luck!

It works fine with the phone number you described, to get me basic internet access.

I was looking to dial into a corporate LAN however.

is that DUN code thinger *99# thing for GPRS internet connection? or is that for regular internet through GSM?

my situation is that I don't want to use the data because it's just way too expensive on AT&T so I would rather use up my voice minutes instead.

So if anybody can go through a step by step tutorial of how I can accomplish this, it would be very very much appreciated.

I have a T68i with D-Link Bluetooth USB adapter, running Window2000 on a Vaio. Thanks!
