> Fantastic remote control flying!
Bookmark topic
As a keen private pilot with several hundred hours logged I sometimes spend time on Microsoft flight simulator and also sometimes flying remote control aircraft.
Now, in my (real) light aircraft flying I also do some aerobatics but I really would be happy if I could have the control that this remote control pilot has of his aircraft
check out the video on
this page
its amazing!

Now that is impressive

For those that have never flown a RC aircraft before, I can assure that it is nowhere near as easy as it looks!
@masseur
I knew you had your PPL but I didn't know you dabbled with Flight Simulator as well? I'm a right saddo when it comes to FS, I spend far too much time and money on that game

Do you ever use any of the online services like VATSIM?

Ive actually done a bit of RC helicoptering and it's very hard, yoou cannot keep your hunds still as you need to contantly adjust it otherwise it will just crash to the side, hovering is probally one of the hardest things to do. Surprisingly its also rather dangerous, if you crash a high powered one (or anykind) parts fly off like shrapnal. I had to give it up when I moved house though as I had no where safe to fly.
The guy had some real tallent there

Thats some serious flying. Must have taken a long time to master some of them moves.

I've played FS since the days of my first Commodore Amiga 1000 (and probably before but can't remember). In those days it was very much wireframe only so its really come along way.
fortunately, it seems, I'm not quite as bad (read sad) as you as I limit myself to just my PC though I do have a control column and pedals.
I did get into Tracon for a while too but decided I'd rather fly than be a controller
Actually I tend to use FS as my guide to whether a PC is performing well because with everything turned on it really is a very demanding piece of software
I tend to have laptops myself but one day (when I'm settled in one place) I wanna have a desktop with 3,4,5 or more screens running FS. For now the best I have is my laptop plugged into my Sony projector with 70" screen
getting back to remote control, I got myself a cessna 172 remote control off ebay last year and now the sun is shining I'm looking for a BIG field to play in

Yeah, a set up like that would be nice. I've only been really into sim flying since FS 95, I only use VATSIM occasionally for organised events with some fellow saddos from a different forum, but it can be surprisingly good sometimes for a bunch of amateurs.
My Girlfriend bought me an introductory flight in a Cessna 172 for my last birthday, it was absolutely awesome. I joined the obligatory flying club afterwards and was all set to start regular lessons when I lost my job
But anyway, I will get my PPL one day

I'll wish you all the best for that because its a fantastic experience.
first solo can be scary doing a circuit on your own but its only done immediately after a number of circuits with your instructor so your already in the right frame of mind.
I did my original PPL at Redhill, on the boarder of the Gatwick control zone, back in 1985 and there was a rain shower heading my way when I did my first solo and I just landed and taxiied back to the instructor when it chucked it down.
many people stop after getting the basic PPL but there is so much more and so many more moments just like that first solo... such as...
your first solo cross country where you're away from the comfort of your home aerodrome.
later, if you choose, comes your first solo night circuit and then solo night cross country. Night flying is superb because there is so little other traffic around and also the air is generally much smoother. I haven't done night flying in UK but in Australia the runway lights up when you key a certain sequence on a certain radio frequency and its fantastic to be in the middle of nowhere approaching your destination in total black and then key that sequence and see your runway light up in front of you! (thats when then sweat stops too!)
if you want to take it further there is the instrument rating and I can tell you that my wife literally kissed the ground in Canberra after I took her on my first instrument flight (in heavy rain showers and almost at minimum visibility and cloud base) after passing the instrument rating!
If you really want a thrill then aerobatics is the thing to do and in Sydney I had an ex-RAAF instructor teaching me and you get so much more confidence when you see what the aircraft can really do!
Finally, if you have the spare cash, multi engine (read that as twin engine) make it all so much more fun
btw, I did a helicoptor lesson is a Robinson R22 but I like the speed down the runway and actually going distances so helicopter never really appealed. Apart from that a 2 seater helicopter costs almost as much as a 6 seater twin to hire!
I could prattle on all night but all I can say is give it a go, its a very rewarding experience
