> EDGE on Orange W810i in London

Hi
I have just about upgraded to SE 810i on Orange and so not seem to get EDGE connection (I live in central London where it should be available) - the "E" sign, although I do get GPRS. Tried to call both Orange and SE, but SE say that a SIM card update might be needed and most people at Orange wireless dept. do not even know what EDGE is and say that they do not support it. Has anyone else had a similar problem and if yes how did you go about solving it? Cheers

Did you hear that EDGE was available in London? If so, where did you hear that from? It may just be a trial that Orange are conducting. Apart from a possible trial, it seems that Orange's EDGE network is not available for use.

as far as i know, none of the UK networks support EDGE at the current time. I thought that Orange did, but since you have called them and they have told you that they do not, then they probably don't. anyway - what's the point in them releasing EDGE on their networks, when they need to get all the money back on UMTS 3G network? - all of the networks spent alot of money on their 3G licenses so they probably will not be able to offer all the latest tech. (especially when EDGE is backwards from UMTS!). If anyone knows any different, please correct me! - I'm gonna go and have a look at Orange's website to see whether they do or not now though...

Also as far as I remember several people on Esato were mentioning that they get EDGE in London.
Can it be the case that EDGE is offered only for business customers?

The EDGE network complements Orange's existing 3G network by providing enhanced delivery of advanced mobile services and by extending Orange UK's coverage for high data speeds. I suppose it makes sense to offer EDGE if they have it in place. The problem with EDGE is that because it hasn't been offered in the UK up until now and because Orange are the only network doing so, there aren't a large number of EDGE capable handsets on sale in the UK. One imagines that Orange will be looking to offer some more EDGE handsets in the near future.
I wonder how this will impact on Orange's 3G business? Will Orange continue to offer EDGE once their 3G network has reached the same coverage levels as their GSM network?

Well if Orange makes money on Data charges then I suppose the more ways of people consuming data the better! It all helps them get that money back.

That's a good point, but I wonder how EDGE will impact their 3G business in the long run. If they want people to migrate to UMTS then offering EDGE handsets might hinder that, Of course if they start selling dual EDGE-UMTS handsets it might not be a problem.

@scotsboyuk I think the industry as a whole has sort of resigned itself to the notion that 3G hasn't been the roaring success it should have been, not yet anyway. The huge cost of the licences meant great rEwards were anticipated. To me 3G has a long way to go before being the primary network. 3G to the networks probably meant huge amount of data traffic and lots of revenue however, to Joe Public it means bargain minutes and texts from 3 network. So all in all I think they just want their money back.

Yes I would agree with the assessment that 3G isn't bringing the rewards that were perhaps expected. However, I don't think that will impact the spread of 3G coverage; the networks are heavily committed to 3G and they need to make it work. The networks in Europe have really gone as far as they can with 2.5G, they can't really offer anything new, certainly nothing that is going to enable them to capture huge market shares from their competitors.
Content is probably their best bet e.g. music, videos, etc. I think they will have to reduce data prices though, that should help spur a greater uptake of 3G based content services.
