VAT stands for Value Added Tax. For everyday High Street consumers, VAT is included in the price tag and that's that, but in a business environment the price often excludes VAT because, if a business has an annual turnover over a certain ammount (not too sure what ammount) it has to be VAT registered which means that whatever VAT the business pays, for services, materials etc, it can claim back.

Here in the UK we call cell phones mobiles and rate plans are called contracts. The term tariff describes the charging structure of your contract.

DAMN!!!! you mean 17.5% above what the item costs!!!! I mean State and local combined here in Oklahoma(Tulsa) is only ~8%
And when you think of it that way you are paying way more because the British Pound is worth more than the American dollar!!!!

Well we don't actually see it that way. When you go to a store and buy a £11.99 CD, that price includes the VAT. The only time you feel you're paying over the odds for stuff is when you go through passport control at the airport and enjoy Duty (VAT) free shopping, where the same CD would only cost £10.20!

If you are stunned by UK VAT regulations you will be shocked by the Norwegian Moms. Moms is basically the same as VAT, and it's 24%! :-( Every time you purchase a product or a service 24% of the total price goes straight to the goverment. And you were suprised by UK VAT?
