> Toshiba Intros New PMR-based HDD

Toshiba's Storage Device Division (SDD) has introduced a 200 GB, 2.5-inch HDD, based on advanced Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology.
This second-generation PMR offering also features, according to Toshiba, the world's highest areal density at 178.8 GB per square inch, and the highest capacity in the standard 9.5-mm mobile PC format.
At 98gms, the new 2.5-inch HDD is light-weight, and incorporates the Serial ATA (SATA) II interface with native command queuing that enables faster data transfer rates and improved technical performance. The HDD boasts of boosting data capacity to 1.67 times that of Toshiba's highest capacity, conventional 2.5-inch drive. The new drive is a slim 9.5 mm, as it contains just two hard-disk platters and four heads.
According to Toshiba, with its new HDD, mobile PC manufacturers can create value with end consumers by providing enough capacity for gaming, video, music, and other multimedia applications. The mass production of the 2.5-inch 200GB MK2035GSS HDD will start in August 2006.
