Camera phones could replace digital cameras as the main gadgets people use to take pictures, a study suggests.

It found that 44% of people already use their handset as their main camera.

The days of the MP3 player also look to be numbered, as 67% of those questioned said they expected their phone to replace their portable music player.

The survey, commissioned by handset maker Nokia, comes as the number of mobile phones in use around the world approaches 2.5 billion.

The Nokia research aimed to find out just how much use people make of the ever-growing list of functions crammed into modern mobile phones.

It revealed some cultural differences among those who responded, with 68% of those questioned in India being the most likely to use their phone as their main camera.

By contrast, 89% of Americans said they would stick with two separate devices. The global average of those expecting to use just one device was 42%.

Tapio Hedman, one of Nokia's senior vice presidents in marketing, said handsets were starting to take over so many areas of everyday life because problems with early models had been ironed out.

"There's a threshold a gadget must reach for it to be accepted as a multi-function device," said Mr Hedman.

"If picture quality is not good enough and browsing is a pain, then it will not be accepted."

Too great a loss

The research found that, on average, a third of people regularly browse the net on their phone.

At the same time it revealed that for many, mobiles are taking over from more mundane devices.

For instance, 72% of those questioned in the survey use their phone as their alarm clock, and 73% use it instead of a wristwatch.

Mr Hedman said the importance of people's mobile phones was shown by the fact that 33% would rather lose their wallet or purse than misplace their mobile.

And a fifth of respondents would rather lose their wedding ring than their handset.

The Nokia research into mobile habits questioned 5,500 people aged between 18 and 35 in 11 nations in early 2006.

very interesting. I'm not surprised tbh - By and large, if a phone has the time on it then people will gradually lose interest in keeping a watch, if it has a decent camera they will give up keeping a dedicated camera (unless they are a hobbyist), if it can play music they won't bother with an mp3 player. Of course there will always be those who like to have dedicated devices for whatever reason, but it's also only natural that the majority of people will just use that which is already contained in their phone.

Time keeping, note taking, torch, calculator, music, camera, calender, alarms, email and internet are just a few of the things a baisc camera phone can provide in one compact package. And that's not even a smartphone....!

Have to agree with you there maxyboy. In general a good phone camera will suffice. People that just want a point and shoot camera will certainly be won over that bit quicker and to be honest with the next batch of camera's with 3.2 mp and built in xenon flash, it's going to be even easier to leave the digicam at home and just take the phone.

Yeah . . . and there are just many other more things that the mobile phone will replace in the very near future . . . one of them for sure is the - LAPTOP/NOTEBOOK ! The BEEPERS were already put into rest wayback. I want to see camfones with Optical Zoom feature on it . . . Hi-End Celfones are the Swiss Knife of gadgets at present . . .

I only have been taking 3mp pics max. So the phones are there. If the quality is right there is no need for a dedicated camera.

quite recently i had a talk with a friend about this ...
the phone is becoming slowly but surely a replacement for many product such as cameras, watches,in the near future even video cameras in some circumstances ( not all ... you won't be seeing news reporters making a pice with theyr cell-phones )
if you think about it the celular does a good job in replacing at least 3 other objects, and from a simple economical view a top end celular costs less than having a celular and a camera and a watch and a i-pod and a notebook. Even if your not interested in the money you can't be carying all taht stuff arround with you all the time, but a celular goes unnoticed anywhere

my phone wont be replacing my camera just yet...

but it has replaced the alarm clock, organiser... and partly the mp3 player...
