TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Sharp Corp will start selling this month in Europe two simplified...

third-generation cellular phone models tailored for that market, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported without citing sources.

These phones do not feature rich and various functions and they will be sold at an estimated 150-200 eur each through Vodafone Group Plc, the business daily said.

The low-end mobile phones will be initially marketed in the UK, France, Spain and some other European countries, with a goal of eventually being sold in 20 nations, it said.

Sharp aims to increase its handset sales outside Japan by 12.6 pct on the year to 4.2 mln units in the current year to March 2007, the report said.

I don't understand why 3G is needed if the phones are going to be quite basic.

3G tariffs are more expensive than GSM tariffs. I don't see what the point is.

@golden - I guess it's more of a marketing strategy here pal Sharp makes limited fone models lately . . . with that, they just don't want to be left behind with the competitors . . . so, since 3G (video calls) are the IN thing now, they've decided to have that feature with their latest releases . . . should they OPT for the 'old' features: radio/camera/bluetooth etc. . . . potential buyers might just go with the other brands I suppose . . . nice report !
