I have just wrote a letter to one of the biggest operators here in Norway (NetCom), and asked them WHY they block SMS-access on the GPRS-net, so that we can't send SMS via GPRS. We all understand that they will loose some money if they open the GPRS for SMS, but shouldn't they also consider the benefits of the users? By blocking the SMS on GPRS, they will slow down the use and development of the GPRS, and that's not good for either the operators or the users. The technology is here to benefit mankind, and we will not accept that some people are keeping this technology back to benefit themself!!! I will post the reply on my mail here on the forum. Anyone that agrees with me on this topic?

I have to agree with you that SMS over GPRS is very cool... especially if you are using a SIM browser from your operator. But it is only a nice to have feature. You have the ability to use SMS today, I believe your operator is focusing on more important things like stailizing the GPRS system, working on GPRS roaming and tightening the cellnet.
I don't think your operator will loose any money from allowing you to send an SMS via GPRS.. they will still be able to charge you for each outgoing message.

Today they are charging you depending how much data you transfer. I pay around 25 euro for transfering 20 mb/per month. And here in Norway one SMS is charged by around 0,13 euro. The point here is that you will be able to send A LOT more SMS over GPRS than over GSM for the same prize, because they charge you for the amount of data on GPRS then by the numbers of SMS on GSM. I can't tell exactly the technical stuff around how many SMS there is in 1 mb, but you will be able to send A LOT more SMS over GPRS for sure.

Thank you for setting NetCom under press in such an important case. I really hope you'll got a reply from NetCom, and it would be very interesting if you could follow up details at this forum. As I wrote yesterday we users have to little influence on the SP, after all it is we will be using the services. So NetCom, come on!

If you where sending you request to NetCom by mail, don't expect a to early reply. I have posted several questions with almost always a weak before I've got the answer! The customer service is far to slow...

Here in Finland I can send SMS over GPRS, but the operator still gets their normal fee for each message. Just by enabling this won't give you cheaper SMS. Operator has to decide how it bills you in this case too. And probably they will charge the usual fee. Sorry to bring you this bad news...
